About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a painless and non-invasive therapy that involves breathing oxygen in a pressurised chamber.

The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chambers used in a wellbeing setting as our clinic are typically soft-shell chambers (or sometimes still hard-shell) operating at lower pressure, between 1.3-1.5 ATA.

Our chamber is a Henshaw 1662 horizontal chamber with 1.3 ATA pressure. It can easily fit an adult and a smaller child.

Oxygen is important for our health. 90% of our daily energy comes from oxygen, and the human brain uses 25% of the oxygen we breathe. Oxygen is what contracts our muscles, repairs our cells, feeds our brains, and even calms our nerves. It is also our chief cleansing tool.

Every day, our body burns off some seven hundred billion old cells. These old cells are toxic and must be removed from our system, if there is low oxygen in the body it struggles to do so, and can lead to disease, infection, and tissue destruction.

When do we use an HBOT

Some typical situations when HBOT is used in a wellbeing setting: may promote the growth of new blood vessels in the brain, may reduce recovery time for athletes enhancing performance and improving endurance.

HBOT may help after surgery to reduce swelling, fight infection, build new blood vessels, producing healthy tissues. HBOT may provide quick, strong, and long-lasting pain relief while reducing inflammation. Overall is a great way to naturally enhance your quality of life.

The experience

As HBOT is a pressurised air therapy, the start and end of your session may feel like the take-off or landing of an airplane. As the pressure builds in the chamber, the pressure also builds within your ears, which may leave you with an ear-popping or fullness sensation.

Once the required pressure is reached you may feel sleepy, and you can relax and breathe normally for the duration of your session.

There are several stages to a typical therapy session...

1. The first stage is compression in which the chamber is pressurised to the prescribed pressure

2. You may feel warm for a few minutes at the start of your session

3. You may feel a slight pressure in your ears or sinuses throughout the therapy

4. The chamber is maintained at this pressure (depth) whilst you breathe in the oxygen

5. You may feel sleepy during this session

6. The chamber is then depressurised and the therapy is finished

7. You may feel cool and slightly tired afterwards, but some might feel really energised
